Transport for Greater Manchester Utilise the Rugged X2 Combat PTZ Camera for City Highways Monitoring

Transport for Greater Manchester

Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) is the local government body responsible for delivering the transport strategy and commitments within the Greater Manchester region. For TfGM, the customer comes first in everything that is done to help make travel as safe and simple as possible, across all 5.6 million journeys made across the transport network each day. Greater Manchester’s exciting programme of capital transport investment is the second largest in the UK and has been provided to deliver long terms plans to establish a fully integrated, high-capacity transport network.

Require a Robust, Reliable Solution

In keeping with the drive to improve, TfGM required a long-term, robust, reliable solution for its City Highways monitoring. Product quality was an essential requirement, but it was equally vital to match this with tier-1 support; both with technical assistance and manufacturing in alignment with deployment phases. Moreover, due to the location of camera points two potential issues arose; firstly, many camera positions were approximately 80m from the nearest mains supply, across a dual carriageway or major junction. Secondly, camera installation roadside will cause interruption to traffic, thus speed of installation is key.

Redvision CCTV Manufactures Rugged CCTV Solutions for Tough Locations

Redvision has a unique heritage in CCTV manufacturing and the Redvision brand is synonymous with rugged CCTV solutions for tough locations. The X2 Combat IP PTZ camera has been designed with this is mind, providing a marine-grade rugged housing to withstand the tough environments around the transport network. Furthermore, its long-life tooled silicone wiper keeps the lens clear of rain and debris; ensuring the super-low light CMOS sensor can obtain clear, usable images in all conditions.

Stephen Lightfoot, Technical Director at Redvision CCTV explains that “camera installation points across the network were often 80m from the nearest mains supply, presenting great challenges and cost, to run an industrial electrical supply to these sites. The X2 Combat has a PoE variant, enabling simple plug and play operating over a full 100m cat 5e span. Moreover, the X2 Combats easy-fit, in-built pedestal mount, with standoff bracket, ensured cameras could be deployed quickly with minimal interruption to traffic. Integration with existing control systems can be a challenge; but the X2 Combat slotted in easily with TfGM’s control platform, allowing full operation of the camera’s functions.”

“As a UK CCTV manufacturer, we have an enviable reputation for our UK-based technical support.” Stephen continues, “This enables us to offer direct, fast support to our customers.”
